Playing safe with electronic mapping

Set to make the administration of council playgrounds easier, GGP Systems has developed a geographic information system (GIS) which links to play site management software, PlaySafe.

PlaySafe provides a detailed register of assets and manages all elements of inspections to ensure that sites are properly equipped and maintained and safety standards adhered to.

The new technique displays maps and aerial photographs on-screen which can be layered with play site locations, along with items like tree preservation orders and lighting. Information such as population figures, catchment areas and incidents involving graffiti or vandalism can also be mapped.

GGP says that the system will provide easy site location on map and geographic searches which filter and display specific data. Other facilities available include the ability to work out areas and distances and the adding of symbols, map legends, shading and other notes. To allow mapping to be added to council web sites, GGP also offer a web-based GIS called eGGP.

Gill Dickson, GGP Business Development Manager, says: “With many of our local authorities also PlaySafe users, GIS is already in use in other departments so play site managers are perfectly placed to take advantage of GIS.”
